Calling all of my fashion blogger girlbosses!  Today’s post is for you!

Earlier this year, I set a goal of working through what I call my VTYJ list…this is a list of blogging-related tasks that I know very little about.  I work my way through this list each week in an attempt to build my knowledge base of this crazy blogging world.  Just when I think I’ve mastered something, I encounter a new technology or a new concept and it gets added to my list (yes, Type A, I know).  This is one of my favorite things about blogging – it stretches my mind and creativity more than I ever thought possible.  Any bloggers out there know what I mean?

One of the items on my VTYJ list was accounting as it relates to blogging, specifically fashion blogging.  I understand the basics of accounting (thank you law school), but I knew there were nuances related to fashion blogging.  As you all know, fashion blogging can be EXPENSIVE, so it was important to me to understand any available tax deductions or possible ways to save as a fashion blogger.

Enter: Erin Armstrong, fellow girlboss and owner of Enlightened Accounting.  Ms. Armstrong created “A Course About Money, For Fashion & Beauty Bloggers” that has been a lifesaver for me.  Her course is divided into four informative, yet digestible chapters that break down the nitty gritty money-related details that EVERY fashion and beauty blogger must know.  She includes links to vital tax forms and other resources that have become a regular part of my weekly blogging routine (e.g., money dates and proper receipt documentation).

I have had access to the course for a few months and have been fortunate to revisit it several times when I’ve encountered a money or tax-related question.  We are all busy and blogging takes up a ton of time, so I’m always thankful that the course is well-organized and includes a list of topics covered in each chapter with corresponding time codes so I can access something as specific as “Wardrobe Deductions” or “Promotions, Giveaways, etc.” down to the second.

After listening, I realized I was missing out on a significant amount of savings based solely on how I was tracking expenses and had structured my business.  By following her advice and incorporating her suggested principles and practices, I was able to set up structures that have made the money-side things much more straightforward and approachable.  (Even my beau, a financial advisor, is impressed!)  I am so grateful to Erin because her expertise has saved me time, money and given me peace about sometimes intimidating concepts.

A Course About Money, For Fashion & Beauty Bloggers” gave me the clarity needed to take my business to the next level.  Check it out here:

Time to go check another task off my list…

xoxo

I tend to get into a rut with work clothes – it is easiest for me to grab the basic black skirt/pants, black blazer and a white or black tank.  Yes, I know.  So boring.  This fall, I’ve been trying to brighten things up a bit.  One of my favorite tanks is this yellow one from Caroline Rose.  It’s also the perfect laying tank for our weird Colorado weather – one that is dressy enough to wear without a blazer for an after work event.

Can we also talk about these pants?  From Topshop — super long.  Absolutely love them!

Have a great weekend girlies!

Jennifer

Blondies Blowout…

Blondies Blowout…

DSC_1196

Today, I’ve partnered with Denver Style Magazine for a beauty post featuring Blondies the Beauty Shop!

One of my favorite indulgences is getting a blowout at Blondies!  Every time I get one, I’m reminded of my grammie’s tradition of getting her hair done every Friday.  I was too young to understand how special her weekly ritual truly was, but I totally *get it* now.  If only I could get a blow dry every Friday! #grammiegoals

Blondies the Beauty Shop is a very special place.  While I always have a relaxing experience, the atmosphere is high-energy that is both inspiring and empowering.  That may seem a bit extreme, but if you’re having a bad day, get a blow dry, put on some lipstick and I promise you will feel like a new girl.  I also love that Blondies’ stylists are gorgeous, stylish and friendly as well as true hair and beauty experts.  (More on that later in the post.)

So, now about my blowout…

DSC_1042

DSC_1035

…these are my before pictures.  I typically walk into Blondies with a hat on or the trusty ole’ topknot.  When I have a blow dry scheduled, I will do just about anything to avoid washing my hair.

DSC_1077

DSC_1082

This is Joe.  He is such a cutie and did my shampooing for my blow dry.

Joe is working in the assistant program at Blondies.  Prior to becoming a stylist at Blondies, assistants are required to work on the floor for two years prior to managing their own book of clients.  In my opinion, this is one of the key aspects of success to the Blondies business model.  The assistants work hard and they are groomed (no pun intended) by Blondies to achieve a high level of professionalism – as a person and a stylist – before they serve clients on their own.

DSC_1160

This is Gwen.  She is truly the best.  Gwen has been my stylist for over five years and I cannot begin to express how thankful I am for her.  You girlies out there know how valuable (and rare!) it is to find someone who just “gets” you.  Gwen definitely gets me.  She works hard to understand my needs and to translate the descriptions of what I want into reality.  My favorite quality of Gwen’s is her desire to learn and improve her skills as a stylist.  She is constantly practicing and refining her skills to give her clients the best services available in the hair industry.

Below are the products used for my Blondies Blowout…

DSC_1095

DSC_1122

Products (left to right):

Oribe Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse

Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray

Kerastase Elixir Ultime Original Oil

Kerastase Cement Thermique

Unite 7 Seconds

I am by no means a product expert, but Gwen is.  I completely trust her recommendations and these are her top five.  (You’re welcome!)

I’ve completely fallen in love with anything Oribe.  I love how rich the products are without weighing down my fine hair.  Since my hair is both fine and bleached, I’m doing double damage to my hair.  Within days of using Oribe, I noticed a difference in the texture, bounce and shine.  While they can be a bit pricey, they do last several months and are completely worth the investment.

Kerastase is another must-have.  This oil is magical.  Because of my fine hair, I’ve never been able to use oil-based products.  This one is totally different.  A little goes a long way and I love to use a few drops on my ends or rub a few drops in my hands and then over the top of my hair to tame fly-aways.

I’ve been using the last two products for several years and they would be in my top ten things to take on a deserted island.  I put about a dime-sized amount of Kerastase Ciment Thermique in my hands and run through my towel-dried hair right before blow drying.  (I’ve also used it as a masque before bed.)

If you can only purchase one from this list, it is Unite 7 Seconds (and it is the most inexpensive – woo hoo!).  Must have, must have, must have!  This is by far the best leave-in conditioner and de-tangler I’ve ever used.  Again, the blonde/fine combo has led me to a ton of research in this area and this is by-far the best I’ve found.

Yes, it seems like a ton of products, but I’ve realized over time that this is one of the secrets.  (Gwen calls it a “product cocktail.”)  Since using these products in my home blow dry, I have noticed that the results are better, my hair feels healthier and my blow dry lasts longer.

Back to the Blondies Blowout…

DSC_1164

Once shampooed and the proper “product cocktail” is applied, Gwen works her magic with the round brush.  She works through each section of my hair with several round brushes at a time.  She will blow dry a section, secure it into place with a round brush and let that section cool while she moves to another section. I have asked her to teach me many times and she is so patient about walking me through each step (for the 80th time), but for the life of me I will never master it.  (And I’m okay with that…it’s just too fun to go to Blondies to have it done!)

DSC_1189

DSC_1184

And the final product!  I feel like a new girl!  My hair is soft, sleek and has plenty of volume.  The Blondies Blowout lasts several days – perfect for any girl who despises blow drying your hair like I do! If you’re in the Denver area, I highly recommend booking an appointment with Gwen or any of the lovely stylists over at Blondies!

For Very Truly Yours readers, I am giving away a blow dry!  Follow these instructions to win:

Follow me on Instagram @verytrulyyoursjennifer;

Follow Blondies on Instagram @blondiesbeautyshop;

Follow Denver Style Magazine @denverstylemagazine;

That’s it!  Winner will be announced on Saturday, May 21!

Jennifer

Outfit Details…

Top by Eliza J // Skirt by Eliza J // Faux Fur by BP // Shoes by J.Renee // Earrings by Stella & Dot

I was so grateful for the opportunity to share this post on birdalamode.com last week.  I also wanted to share here just in time for the holidays…

I love all of the opportunities to dress up during the holidays…work parties, church services, girls’ nights and family gatherings.  This year, while shopping for holiday events, I found this fantastic skirt at Nordstrom…simply put, it is amazing.  The fabric is luxurious, yet surprisingly comfortable.  I love the detail on the print – bold florals and shimmery, metallic accents.  Wearing this skirt truly makes me feel like the Belle of the Ball!

I styled this skirt with a simple black top, black patent heels and accessorized with a faux fur infinity scarf.

Side note: I absolutely adore this infinity scarf and have been wearing it all December.  I even purchased two extras for gifts!

What are your favorite holiday looks this year?

Hello Loves!

Adoring this bohemian-inspired dress from Topshop.  The beaded detail is incredible for the price of this dress.  {Update: On sale now!}  It’s dressy and timeless, yet versatile, making it a fantastic addition to your closet.

These photos were taken near one of my favorite Denver-based restaurants.  If you are in Denver, I highly recommend trying Comida.  Comida began as a food truck, but has opened two brick and mortar cantinas in the Denver/Boulder area.  Their location in The Source is fantastic.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Very Truly Yours,

Jennifer

// BaubleBar Vivid Crispin Drops //

Happy Monday (even though it feels like a Sunday…)!!

In honor of President’s Day, I’ve been doing some online shopping (sad, but true – some great sales today)! The best sale I’ve found is on BaubleBar’s site. Their Semi-Annual sale ends tonight. The prices are appealing, but even better is that the items on sale are still relevant and on-trend.

My favorite sale items are:

Crystal Mason Ring – ($14) – I wear my gold one EVERYWHERE, but also love this metal color.

Ishigaki Drops ($22) – Loving the tassels and bold blue color of these earrings.

Flori Drops ($24) – This style is a bit different than anything I’ve seen lately. Love the light and airy feel to them, even though they are a substantial, statement piece.

Striped Crispin Drops ($32) – A version of mine (pictured above), but in a fun color with a stripe to add interest.

Nightfall Threader Druzy Drops ($22) – These are so cute! Dainty, class and the color is perfect for spring.

Happy Monday!

I recently visited the desert and had the opportunity to meet the sweetest photographer named Bree.  I’m still amazed by how she captured the beauty of the desert.  We shot at sunset and it was absolutely stunning.  I was in awe of the desert landscape – the cactus, the flowers, the mountains – and I kept thinking – wow, I hope she can get all of “this” in the pictures.  She totally did.  Amazing.

Being from Colorado, I am surrounded by the most beautiful landscapes every day.  No matter the season, I love the mountains.  But there is just something about the southwest that strikes a cord with my heart.  I went to undergrad in Arizona and the desert reminds me of that special time in my life.  I will always have an affinity for the palm trees and the warm sunshine!

I picked up this cute dress from Pinks before my trip.  It is such a great piece for travel because it is literally that dress you can crumple up in your suit case, yet it never looks wrinkled.  I love the asymmetrical hemline – this works well on both tall and short frames (and anything in between).  I paired the dress with tall gladiators and a cropped jean jacket.

{Visit or call Pinks if you’d love this dress.  Otherwise, I’ve linked several asymmetrical options in the widgets above.}

I cannot say enough about these gladiators.  I’ve paired them with several outfits in the short time I’ve had them.  I love that they are flat, yet provide some drama to any outfit.   They also come in a nude color that I have on my wish list!

Here’s to a great week – already dreaming of my next desert vacation!

xoxo
